Description type number
W G C CB R TM D 215 A 40-04 40 Z V PL2 CR TB
W Alternating current
This drummotor is fitted with a 1PH (single- phase) winding.
G Direct current
This drummotor is fitted with a DC (direct current motor). This range includes drummotors based around TM138 designed to operate on 12 or 24V DC. The maximum available power is 0,75 kW.
C Conical
This drummotor is fitted with a conical shell designed primarily for belt bends
CB Clutch Brake
If a drummotor is switched on and of many times a minute it will generate a lot of heat caused by the high start current. A clutch brake could be the solution. This is a mechanical coupling between the rotor and the gears, combined with a brake. This allows the electric motor to stay on continuously whilst the 'transmission' is controlled through the clutch-brake mechanism.
R Brake
This drummotor is fitted with a 'fail-safe' electro mechanical brake. Brakes are available for different supply voltages. The brakes available depend on the drummotor type.
For an extended description see our brake/backstop page.
TM Drummotor
The abbreviation TM means drummotor. If it says KT, it means a taildrum.
D Dual
Sometimes the maximum power mentioned in our catalogue is not sufficient for a certain application. We have several designs where two electric motors can be installed in the drummotor giving twice the power for the same diameter.
215 Diameter
This is the approx diameter of the shell in mm's. This is not exact and more information on dimensions can be found on our drawings.
A End caps
There are two different end cap designs. A-design has an external 'hub' (ideal for belts with edge tracking guides), B-design has a flat face.
40 Shaft diameter
This is the diameter of the round part of the shafts in mm's. On the drawings you can also find the dimensions of the square part of the shafts which fit into our mounting brackets.
04 Number of poles
A "GV" drummotor is designed around an asynchronous electric motor. The number of rotations per minute (RPM) of the rotor is determined by the number of poles in the stator. A 4-pole electric motor connected to a 50 Hz supply rotates at about 1500 rpm, a 2-pole motor at 3000 rpm and an 8-pole motor at around 750 rpm.
40 Power
The power of the drummotor in HP. The position of the comma varies. In this example 40 is 4 HP i.e 3kW.
Z Transmission
This means that the last stage of the drummotors transmission has an internal ring gear instead of an external gear wheel.
V Bearings
This drummotor has a heavy duty bearing on the driven (gearbox) side. We use this bearing type for drummotors that operate at lower speeds.
PL2 Gear
For low speed high torque applications Van der Graaf uses a range of 'in-house' planetary transmissions. A PL2 is a 2-stage transmission, a PL3 a 3-stage and a PL4 a 4-stage planetary transmission.
CR Sealing
To keep the oil in and water and dirt out, our drummotors are fitted with special sealings. For different applications there are different types of sealing. e.g ip68 UW (underwater) sealing.
For a complete description see our sealing page.
TB Backstop
This drummotor is fitted with a backstop (anti run back device). TBRH means the drum only rotates cw looking at the terminal box end and TBLH acw.
